3 Things I Wish I’d Known Before Making A Travel Video

By on September 30, 2015

I wanted to share a few key things I wish I had understood when I was just starting out making Travel/lifestyle films. This is for anyone who wants to start out on this journey and make their own videos.

#1 – Everything you capture is a reflection and expression of where you are at now

If I look back to some of the first travel videos I made, they were during a school trip I took to L.A. When I watch them back now, they look pretty terrible.

But then I realised at the same time – they are perfect.

They reflect perfectly who I was, they reflect perfectly the situation I was in, and perfectly what I saw.

Yes I was awkward and either nervous or putting on a ‘front’ for camera, but that’s who I was back then. Yes the editing could have been more snappy and the shots could have been cooler – but that’s where I was at in filmmaking back then. Yes the situations I was filming were boring/touristy – but that’s exactly what I was doing  – I was on a school trip…

When you look at films, or almost anything through this lens, then you realise that anything you create and put out into the world is perfect in it’s own way because it reflects the stage you were at at that time. So if you truly understand that then it encourages you to create more and ironically, avoid perfectionism.

#2 – Relax and keep friends and good times first

I always find that the best shots come about when I’m feeling most relaxed, and the people around me are having the best time. The worst situations to shoot in are when people are feeling a little awkward, and you’re trying to force something that doesn’t exist.

So – you can either wait for the perfect situation where everyone’s feeling great – or you can create that environment and bring those vibes yourself.

When you’re able to do this, you can make the most boring situation fun because people are relaxed and having a good time. Not only does this make the environment funner but it also does two other important things:

  1. Allows people to be more expressive, and therefore do more exciting things
  2. Gets yourself into a more free, enthusiastic and creative state that will allow you to better capture those awesome shots.

#3 – It’s all about creating situations where the magic happens

This is the most exciting part for me to think about. What makes for the best, most inspiring videos? It’s the scene that you are filming. It then becomes one of your most important jobs as a adventure/lifestyle/travel filmmaker to either 1) create or 2) be a part of, the most exciting situations possible.

This is where dreams meet reality.

To be able to make the best videos, you have to create the best situations possible, which in turn means… you have to create the best life for yourself possible.

You want to make the films that express your dreams, the way you see the world, the way you want your world to look like? This means you have to make your dreams into reality.

I’ve done this with my life to an extent so far by creating a business that allows me to travel – but I’ve got a long way to go, and I personally can’t wait to share it with you.
